The Last Soviet

257

Lance Bass, NSYNC Superstar and Russian trained astronaut, takes you on a wild ride into space. He tells the story of the last Soviet cosmonaut who is trapped on the world’s only space station, as the country he knows and loves collapses beneath him. On this journey through Earth’s atmosphere in the form of a podcast, Lance introduces you to the woman who won a reality show cosmonaut contest, a ham radio operator in Australia who became a lifeline for the Soviet Space Station, a hustler from Chicago who tried to sell coca-cola to the Russians and the editor of Playboy who took part in a revolution.

It’s one man’s dream to go to space, his dedication to the country he thought he knew and 313 days spent orbiting the Earth. 313 days that changed our world.

Plus, Lance’s own dream to go to space and the lengths he went to make it a reality.

    Awesome!
I am sad that I’ve already burned through all of the episodes. Lance has a calming voice and it was great to listen to this in the evening after the rush of a busy day. What an interesting set of stories. Well put together!

    Ads, ads and more ads….
I was excited to listen to this after hearing an interview with Lance Bass and having him suggest listening to it through headphones in bed or somewhere you could just lie down and immerse yourself…. And I totally agree - but the the commercials ruined it. Nothing like getting jerked out of a story by some lame, corny commercials. I heart radio surely doesn’t need the ad revenue to support its podcasts. I unsubscribed and will avoid any I heart radio podcasts in the future. Such a beautifully told story, but I can find it elsewhere without ads.

Great show— ruined by the ads
The show it’s self is great but the ads are so obnoxious it’s almost unbearable. I’ll be avoiding iHeart podcasts from now on.

    Amazing podcast
Great to listen to. Great storytelling. Lance really showed his vulnerability and it’s good to hear from him. Also good job production team for creating a great storytelling.

    Better than his “music”
Not saying much but then again I think bands should play instruments and such.

It's over?! But I need to know MORE!
Full disclosure, I am a former space camp attending NSYNC fan, but that truly doesn't matter. This podcast is compelling in ways I had no expectations it would be. I've been telling everyone to listen since I finished. Wow! It is so interesting and layered and touches on not only the geopolitical background of the circumstances, but also the amazing nature of the human spirit. The only bummer is it ended and I have so many question remaining. Thanks for bringing this story to the listeners and Lance, please consider doing a Q&A on your story as well. I! Have! Questions!

    Second season was not needed

First season was great. Not a fan of second.
Loved the first season. Can’t be bothered with second. Mostly, because of narration.

    Slow
I don’t know what it is about iHeart podcasts. They are always so slow. It seems like they are trying to build tension where it doesn’t really belong. It’s an interesting story, but could have been shorter.

    Fascinating
Loved listening to every minute of this, thank you Lance and thank you Kaleidoscope- gripping and fascinating and I’m going too listen to the whole series again 👏

    Pleasantly Surprised
Lance does a great job crafting an interesting story. Doesn’t drag it out with unimportant details, and doesn’t make it about him. Very professional! I ending was a little anticlimactic.

    Excellent!
I love documentaries, but this one outbid the previous ones. Lance made story interesting, intriguing, captivating, throwing me back to the era of Soviet Union, its collapse, and the life after. Just like previous comment, I was also sad when it was finished. Спасибо, Лэнс, Вы проделали феноменальную работу! I hope one day your dream will come true. Fantastic job, Lance! Love it from the first minute to the last. I am so thirsty for the documentaries like this one.

    The best podcast ever!!
The only thing that is better is if Sergei had been on it. It is very relevant and well done. It tells the story of the space race from the Soviet Union’s perspective. I wish there were more episodes!

Outstanding! Was sad 😞 when I finished it
An excellent podcast! Lance does an outstanding job hosting. All of the stories are interesting, and the production is well done. I finished it this morning, wishing for more episodes!

Nice to hear a nuanced podcast on life in USSR
Pleasantly surprised that this podcast isn’t dumbed down for US consumption of history. The reporting and sourcing is great, and the Russian-language skills of the producers, host and researchers really help unearth this remarkable window on history. Props to this team, which made a great show despite losing access to the main source thanks to our current geopolitical nightmare.

    Perfect!
The details of the story are woven together with news clips, appropriate background sounds and Lance's soothing voice. It is well written and well produced. A delight to listen to.

    Just incredible.
Loved hearing your story Lance and you and your listeners would probably love the science fiction trilogy about life and travel to other planets called "The Solar System Galaxy"-"A Truly Dead Rock", "A Bottled Up Flame", and "A Somewhat Odd Start"...all from the mind of a brilliant genius who was 14, 15, and 16 when he wrote and published them.

    Relevant to the Present
Loving this podcast! What a remarkable way to understand current affairs and to appreciate the Russian people and cosmonauts through the fascinating history of this dramatic event. Intriguing, entertaining, inspiring and even heartwarming! A very important story to be told at this stage in history.
  • Zarasahara1
    Really enjoy it!
Well done podcast! Love listening to it while driving!
  • HeatMcManus
    Great, but he wasn’t alone
I really am enjoying this podcast but I noticed there was a frequent reference to “they” when talking about the Soviet space station. That would indicate more than one person up there. Low and behold, Krikalev wasn’t alone. Cosmonaut Alexander Volkov was with him. Is there any reason he is being completely ignored?
  • warrior_cats432
    Love it but
I love it but I really wish there more episodes because I get a little crazy when I finish the latest episode.
  • Briseis27

    Forgotten Cold War Story
Well told facts mixed with personal experiences of the people who either participated in the Soviet space program or witnessed the fall of Communism. Well done Lance!

Great story, well done. iHeart tries to ruin.
Well produced and great story. Lance is very polished. iHeart radio ads will pummel you into not finishing the series.
  • Syrus Neilson
Great story, story telling, and sound production.
The trailer caught my attention and I decided to listen. Really enjoyed the format and Lance’s podcast style (even though I’m sorry to admit I never listened to NSYNC). I’m hooked and waiting for the next episode.

More Than Meets the Eye 😍
Love the breadth and depth of this story. The narration is equally as engaging! The only reason I gave it a 4 vs 5 was because of the many and repetitive commercials. I am bringing this up not to be critical but to encourage you to find a different way forward! Thanks for sharing this very pertinent and rich story. 🙌

    Family Story Time
So Long story short. I listened to the first episode and then that night before bed time for my 10 year old son that is glued to the x-box I told him we should listen to a story about an astronaut told by a famous man that mommy and daddy used to dance or try to dance to. Anyway Lance you are an amazing story teller and person and have found something that my 10 year old son and 8 year old daughter now!! Can sit down and spend good time together. Not to mention my 8 year old daughter is secretly obsessed with space and just watching the stars and planets. Thanks Lance looking forward!!!! Jason Mitcham

    Wild story
Wild story told so well. I don’t normally enjoy celebrity driven but this was with reason and was perfectly matched

    Interesting but moves slowly
An important story in history but the slow, plodding production is frustrating. Reached for the fast forward several times.

This story is mesmerizing! Lance’s voice and his love and background with space are perfect for this. The production with added sound effects and contributing narration also keep the listener glued. I can’t wait to listen to the next episode.
