History #167

From the Norman Invasion to the War of Independence, the Great Famine to the Troubles, the Irish History Podcast takes you on a journey through the most fascinating stories in Ireland's past. Whether it’s the siege of Dublin in 1171 or gun battles in the 1920s, the podcast vividly recreates a sense of time and place. Each episode is meticulously researched, creating character-driven narratives that are engaging and accessible for all.

Since the first episode was released back in 2010, the podcast has covered scores of captivating stories. Major multi-part series have explored the Great Famine, the Norman Invasion, and Irish involvement in the Spanish Civil War. If you are looking for standalone episodes, there are lots of great interviews with leading Irish historians covering topics from medieval sex magic to Irish connections in the Jack the Ripper murders!

Why not start with 'Three Days in July', an acclaimed mini-series from the summer of 2024. It explores the early years of the Troubles and the forgotten story of a young Londoner who was shot dead by the British Army in Belfast in 1970.

Just a question, were Typhoid John and Typhoid Tony cooking for other people???If so, then they should have been imprisoned as well! I take your points about class and anti- Irish sentiment, but she was cooking for others.

    So disappointed
I paid the €5.99 for the 1348 audiobook and acast signed me up as a member, but only sent chapter 4 of the audiobook.

    Very Engaging!
Please keep these podcasts going! I have learned so much from this and feel as if I’m there at each historic event discussed! This is very thorough and scholarly. Brilliant!

    Thumbs up!
My grandparents were Irish (born in Ireland), so I enjoy checking in on the podcast from time to time. Whenever I do, I’m never disappointed.

    Tremendous podcast
This is a great podcast. Fin brings so much energy to the broadcast. He has thoroughly researched the topics, and he brings the history to life.

    Treasure trove, but…
This podcast is made occasionally unlistenable by excessive use of colonial passive voice. Finn has done incredible work over the years to bring Irish history to the public. The catalog is a treasure trove, but bring the same skepticism you would bring to an English-written history of Ireland. I wish he’d consider his biases and learn to adjust language and perspectives. Published history in English is - naturally - biased towards English culture including its legal prioritization of individualism, landlordism, normalization of colonialism, racism, etc. I wish Finn would notice how often he uses the passive voice to obscure responsibility and how often he discounts the native Irish and Irish language, law, and culture.

    Good content- too many commercials
I really enjoy the history discussed in this podcast but there are a lot of long disruptive commercials. They interrupt content and are loud compared with the content.

    Sorry I don’t got a title
If American people are listening, that’s how Irish people sound. PS in Ireland, that’s how Irish people create their voice in the podcasts.

    Poor audio
The audio level on your shows is too low. I’ve been listening for several years. I have a brand new iPhone turned up all the way. And, still cannot hear. D You also tend to give the impression that Ireland didn’t exist before the medieval period in the Roman clergy. I’ve noticed this in several episodes…

Thanks for bringing Ireland to the rest of us
I’m from the US but will be traveling to Ireland later this year. I started listening to learn more about the culture and history of the country and have gained so much appreciation for both through Fin’s excellent research and calming storytelling. I listen while driving, choring, and to relax in order to fall asleep (I promise this is a compliment).

    The Myth of Irish Neutrality
Very good show. Would have been even better if it included a comparison and contrast to the northern part of our island, which was part of the British war effort and had US troops based there. The economic juxtaposition and impact on partition socially and politically was enormous Paul McCourt

    Essential Preservation of History
my deep appreciation to Finnfor researching and then presenting with accuracy an unvarnished history of my ancestors. Despite my third generation American Irish lineage, there is muchof the tragic and heroic history of the Irish people I haven’t known. My ancestors lie in the soil of Kilkenny, and Finn brings real narrative to what may have been their daily life.

    Excellent podcast
I am really enjoying the War of Independence podcast . Huge huge thanks to al the team for bringing the excellent series to us and reminding us of our heroic ancestors and everything they did to give our country independence. I especially loved the episode with Liz Gills on the role women played in the revolutionary movement .

    One of my favorites
Never learned much Irish history here in the US but he does a phenomenal job delving into topics we’ve heard of AND subjects I never would have expected. Always a delight to see a new episode pop up in my feed.

Well done, but your guest was helariously liberal. She uses a PC term for Nationalism-a good thing for Ireland and based on the right of self-determination. She pretends that social welfare is a better good.

Must Listen for Irish History Fans
For more than ten years, Fin Dwyer, has been making podcasts covering a wide diversity of periods across the span of Irish History. His road to “Old Croghan” delves into Irish prehistory while his current “War of Independence” series represents a significant commitment to broadening listener understanding of the pivotal 20th century struggle for Irish Independence. With each passing year Fin’s ambitions expand to deliver more comprehensive content. He does not disappoint

    From one Dwyer to another
The Irish History podcast podcast accompanies me on my 40 minute drive to work each day. As a the daughter of Dwyer whose family hails from Thurles I have particularly enjoyed our most recent journey through South Tipperary and the background Finn provides leading up to the first shots of the Irish war for Independence.

    Awesome
I m a non Irish (senior ) Californian who just finished Leon Uris’ book “ Trinity”. I knew nothing about Ireland before this book. I became interested in more detail piqued by Uris’s history in the novel. I found this Podcast and can’t seem to stop listening. The pace is perfect and the detail is just right. The podcasters voice is inviting and crystal clear. I’d recommend this to any history buff. Thinkkkker

    Interesting and full of information
If you like hardcore history you'll like this podcast. Love that the Fin doesn’t feel the need to editorialize the pod with his own personal politics!! Love this pod, the rest is history, and The History of England!

    Irish History podcast
My people come from near Enniskillen in County Fermanagh. They came to Canada in the 1920’s and 30’s. We have always been in touch with family in Ireland. This podcast answers so many questions I wish I had asked my father.

    Excellent podcast
This is such a fantastic podcast mainly because it provides fantastic detail but it such an entertaining, interesting and digestible way. I love how history is explained through the eyes of people from the period and it’s told in an engaging story like manner. I’ve learned so much.
  • meggydm
    Amazing detail, storytelling, and histories!
This podcast is outstanding! It is so hard to find podcasts on the history of Ireland before the 1800s. I am loving this and look forward to all of the episodes! Great job!

    Fantastic adventures in Irish history
Listening from America, what a treat! My great great great gran (1824-1908) left Ireland in 1850 for America. It’s incredible to hear all these stories. I feel more connected to my family’s past in Ireland.
  • Andrew from New Hampshire
    Solid podcast, thanks!
As a history major with a little bit of Irish ancestry I decided to give this podcast a listen. It’s a sharp learning curve coming to it cold, but Fin’s enthusiasm for the topic and great presentation make it worth sticking with the litany of names and places. I like how he doesn’t stick strictly to chronological order and covers a range of topics. His storytelling can sometimes seem a bit over the top (my wife sometimes remarks “are you listening to the Irishman tell you how hard it was in the olden days again?”) but this is easily forgiven for the quality of content. Thanks for helping keep our brains alive during the pandemic! Appreciate all you do.

    Thorough and Broad Ranging
This podcast is really special because of the depth of knowledge the host has and the diversity of the types of stories within. True crime, war history, mysteries, labor union uprisings, murder—it has everything. In particular I appreciated the long running series about the Great Famine, with its uncanny echoes to modern day government failures/humanitarian crises made worse by government inaction (although the amount of times the host warns that the “situation had grown increasingly dire” was kind of repetitive!) it is a thorough and deeply researched look at a part of history I as an American knew little about. I also thought the Land Worth Dying For episodes were totally engrossing. I am grateful this podcast continues to bring this rich history to life.

    Love It!
I love this podcast. I have learned so much. I am making a list of places I would like to visit. Just wish I found this podcast before I went to Ireland last year. Keep up the excellent work!
