Fiction #168

You're never too old to make a bad decision. After twenty winters on the road, Tanyth Fairport makes one last pilgrimage in her quest to learn all she can about the herbs and medicinal plants of Korlay before settling down to write her magnum opus. Her journey is interrupted when she decides to help a small village and learns that much of what she knows of the world may not be quite as it seems. Nathan Lowell blends wiccan tradition and shamanistic lore into a fantasy quest for a new - if unlikely - heroine. She learns that the familiar sometimes hides the fantastic and that, even when you think you’ve made your decisions, life doesn’t always agree.

The horticulturist, the kitchen conjurer, the wanderer
Listening to this as a horticulturist, arborist, step mama and hopeless independent wanderer who appreciates solid writing and wholesome, helpful and extremely well researched content. I listen while I tend to the 6000 trees in the cemetery arboretum where I work and learn about plants and their secrets, selecting them for cultural, ecological, practical and spiritual significance whenever possible. This is such a beautiful break from my normal diet of scifi and horror. 10/10.

    Excellent
I can relate to a woman who enjoys a good bit of oatmeal and respects the power of a nap. Just downloaded “Zypheria’s Call” via kindle. I must know what happens next.

    Refreshing
I’m surprised and gratified to have found a book in which the heroine is a very capable middle aged woman. I can relate! The story line is not predictable. I’m anxious to find out what else happens in Tannyth’s journey

Great story line, fully developed characters. This first in the series left me wanting more. Nathan has an easy to listen to voice.

    Worth a Listen!
What a charming narrative Podcast. It is a midlevel tale of old with a delightful soundtrack and a slight touch of fantasy. Definitely worth a listen.

If 'Miss Read' & Tom Bombadil made the beast with 2 backs
this would be their issue. Very slow, but very descriptive. Overall a very good beginning. A couple of points keep this from 4 stars. The big one first. The bad guys should have been killed the first time. I just never got over them coming back again and again and finally again. Then, small second problem. She is asked a question and answers "Beats me". ??? Prepare yourself for no dragons. No werewolves. Even no magic. Then listen to this. He reads just a little, little too fast for me. I'll probably buy the rest of the trilogy. You should enjoy this if you're over 12 (mentally).

    Amazingly Addictive
Nathan Lowell is one of the best story tellers of all time. He has a way to put you into the story keep you there. Amazing production quality now also. Do yourself a favor and listen to this.

    Very Well Done
I really enjoyed the Trader series and so I gave this one a try. The premise didn't excite me and I believe it's hard to pitch it so that it would. That said, I really enjoyed it. The pacing was comfortable and I love how the simple things take on a richness that only a great storyteller can bring. The same can be said of the brief intro/outro with the lovely flute music and Nathan's consistent even narration. Thank you sir!

    wonderful story
i've listened to a few audiobooks while on my daily commute, and i've enjoyed most of them. but this is the first one that has made me bring my ipod out of the car each night and plug my earphones in while i'm around the house, not content to wait until the morning drive to hear more of this delightful tale. strong characters, an unconventional older female lead, and a beautifully modulated reading voice makes this podiobook one of my favorites to date. looking forward to hearing more from this author.

Mr. Lowell rose to the Challenge
The Tanyth Fairport series started as a challenge for Mr. Lowell to write Fantasy with a Female lead. Not only did he accomplish this effort, but he hit it out of the park. His Magic in this world is loosely based on Wicca. It is not your typical spell slinging magic; however it works in the novels’ context.

    He did it again
Nathan Lowell's writing is a balm to my soul. He has an amazing insight to a strong woman and writes his characters beautifully. I listen on a long commute home and all the stress of the job melts away. On a side note, it is very well produced.

    What a pleasant surprise
I didn't know what to expect when I downloaded the first few chapters of this book, but was so enthralled, that I ended up downloading the remaining chapters the following day. Great story, interesting characters, and I love the earth-centered themes. Nathan is also a very good narrator. Thank you for making my very long commute ENJOYABLE for two weeks!

A delight! Tanyth grabbed me immediately - and what a feminist you have turned out to be, Mr. Lowell. More, more, more please! Love the power and wry humour you have given the crone in this, the strongest , most potent phase in her life thus far. Thank you for this gem!

    Ravenwood - give us more!
Another well-written, engaging book by Mr. Lowell. Completely different genre and story, but same style. He drags you into the story with the first episode. We want more Tanyth!

Yet another great story told in the wonderful style of this author. This was a very relaxed story with a little bit of action mixed in. The characters are strong and likable, and the story always kept my interest. Well done!

  • a thankfull listener

the tales of ishmael got me hooked on nathens writting he is an exellent writter he spins stories that are so... real that we see ourselfs in his charicters and hope that we could spend a day in his world. i always find it ironic that he thanks us for listening... i always chuckle and say thank you for writing it P.S. my spelling is bad i know, i make up for it by being an great puplic speaker

    Good for the Soul
Let this tale warm you like a blanket in winter. The words will soothe your soul, as imagination takes wing. Another great story from Nathan Lowell, best heard on a winters night in front of a fire. I wished the experience would go on and on "from the eye of the Raven."

    The Seinfeld of Podcasts
I can't tell you why I like Lowell's works. They are the only books that can cover so much yet give so little. I can only compare it to a good episode of Seinfeld (the show about nothing). I keep listening, hoping that something major happens...something exciting, but the resolution is always anticlimactic. I just keep listening though. Lowell has the ability to keep you interested and the character development is superb, just put some action or sex or gore in there sometimes...dang it!
  • Ker-cher
    I'm sorry
I'm sorry, but I seem to be the only one here that doesn't love his writing. He has a great voice, I'll give him that. But when it takes two chapters to talk about a woman who travels down a road and stops at a village. I'm going to move on to a book that gets going a little faster than this. Don't let my review sway you though, if you love books that go into monotonous detail, by all means download this book.

    Wonderful!
Nathan Lowell has done it again, this story is one of his best. So far I have listened to all of his books on Itunes and I can't get enough. The charactors come to life and the story draws you in. Nathan please keep up the good work! I can't wait for more of your tales of adventure to hit Itunes.
  • J_hawk76
Excellent, as expected from Nathan Lowell
I loved this book, just like all of the Solar Clipper books. It is well written, the plot is engaging, and it is a pleasure to listen to Nathan Lowell read.
  • LunaKT
    Highly enjoyable
I enjoyed the great narration--no voices, no weird sounds, just good, clear, soothing reading. The story is not action-filled, but I was drawn into it and enjoyed the leisurely pace of the story. Would love to hear more of this series any time. I highly recommend this pleasant read (listen).
