    Short podcast, aggressive advertising
The podcast itself is well written but annoyingly short, especially compared to other narrative history podcasts. It’s also being used to “Trojan horse” another podcast (The School of Greatness) as “bonus content” that has absolutely nothing to do with history and is utter crypto bro flavored garbage. I like Dan Jones, but give this one a big swerve- it’s not worth the debris in your feed.

    My favorite podcast
As a true history nerd, I was so happy to find this very well, very interesting podcast. Keep up the good work! I even subscribed for all the extra content I love it so much.

    Where is Dan?
Please get Dan Jones back on the air!! Edward III is not the end of the Plantagenet Dynasty and so much interesting stuff is just waiting for Dan’s magic touch! Please come back Dan—full time! BTW I really enjoyed ‘Henry V’. Thanks so much for your insight. From across the pond—a most devoted fan!!

    Brings ancient history to life
Well written and excellent story telling. Better than any TV mini series. Totally binge worthy. Highly recommend!

    Enough with the cliffhangers
I’m a paid subscriber and enjoy a tease at the end of an episode. But enough with the cliffhangers already.

Stop promoting the School of Greatness
It’s a bad podcast and frustrates me that you push it through your feed.

    Great Podcast
Content and Presentation is great, but the frequency of the ads are awful - worth subscribing to, just to avoid the ads

    Not bad
They split the story’s up too much. But other than that it’s a good pod.

One of the most fascinating telling of history.
Dan does an excellent job of recreating what took place. For those who think history is dull, give this excellent series a listen.

    Great Story Telling
Dan Jones is a masterful storyteller. This podcast brings history to life in episodic tales that are as engaging as any TV series. I find myself waiting expectantly for each new episode.

The Plantagenets are a HUGE deal
I subscribed to this podcast because I’m a big fan of Dan Jones’s approach to history. His narrative voice is accessible and he knows his stuff. Jones is a rarity in that he produces outstanding audiobook/podcast material with his own work. Recommended for history buffs, for those who are seeking vibrant, accurate history (even if they aren’t huge history fans normally - they will be!), and for anyone who appreciates any era Jones is discussing.

    Addictive.
This is an exceptional show that contains all the necessary elements which make it irresistible including great story telling, humor and relaying history in a way that modern audiences can easily follow. I love British History but it can be really confusing with all of the Edwards, Richards and Henry’s. Dan is superb at laying it all out in a clear and concise way. I am in love with this show. I also highly recommend his books.

The start of the fifth season is very disappointing! The previous seasons were great. Cut down on the commercials please.

    What happened to this podcast??
Original review of 5 stars: Finally another history podcast that uses narrative storylines rather than the usual ‘interview a historian’ style. My only problem is that the episodes are dreadfully short. Some are only like 17 min and there is a decent amount of commercials. Otherwise it’s great! I had to rerate and downgrade to 3 stars. I was so excited that there was another narrative historical podcast. And during season 5 they turned it into a lot of ‘in conversation’ episodes. I don’t want to listen to another ‘interview/book commercial’ podcast there are literally hundreds of historical podcasts like that. So bummed.

    Ruined by proliferation of ads
I love dance books and I have purchased multiple ones but the high number of boisterous off-topic ads are ridiculous on this. If the episode is 15 minutes long and there are almost 5 minutes of ads this is outrageous and not worth it. Shame on you.

    Wonderful podcast
This is an outstanding podcast. I walk 12-18 miles a day and this show is my constant companion

    Woke mysandry
This is the second guest to try to gaslight the Middle Ages and apply current wokism on history. I am grateful because I forgot why I started avoiding this author after originally being a fan. I may avoid Dan sooner or later for his woke ideology but so far I haven’t noticed any in his regular podcast episodes.

Great stuff. History is better than fiction when done right and Dan nails it.

    Why am I subscribing!?!
Absolutely addicted, but season 5 has commercials in all of the episodes… Dan is a phenomenal storyteller and the additional episodes of information not covered in the episodes are amazing.

Dan is a wonderful teacher and it’s clear he really knows his stuff! He is an amazing storyteller. He can take a few dates, names and a chronicle, enrich it with context and provide me with an entertaining way to learn the real history of the Plantagenet dynasty. He's a joy to listen to! This is my new favorite way to learn! More podcasts please!

    Fantastic all the way through
It’s interesting, extremely well researched, and a lot of fun. Have loved every episode- even the one where someone gets his skull pummeled. Absolutely terrific podcast.

    Captivating
I was so excited for this podcast as soon as I heard the news and let me tell you as we end the final chapter of season five I am still just as excited every time I find a new episode has been released. Becoming a subscriber is worth the small subscription fee as well! So interesting and fun listening to Dan and producer Georgia rehash the episodes and Georgia always has great questions to ask Dan that help us understand the story even more. As we waited for season five we were treated with “The Iron King” by the Five Minute Medievalist, Danièle Cybulskie. Dan and Danièle both are masters at story telling and are easy to listen to for hours. What is also nice is you can tell you can trust that they will give their honest opinions on the facts/fiction which revolve around so many stories from the past. I am looking forward to Dan’s interview with Helen Castor coming up, woo! Thank you to everyone at Sony who have worked to bring this podcast these fascinating stories to life for us!

    Love
Bought The Plantagenents on a whim one day and I’ve been hooked on Dan Jones ever since! Whether it be a podcast, tv show, or book he never disappoints in bringing history to life.

So many history podcasts -so little time
Dan Jones is one of the historians I am so happy to be able to support. Highly recommended !

    Obsessed !!!
I am completely obsessed with your podcast Dan ! I binged all five seasons and now starting the PLUS episodes ! You have a great way of enveloping the listener into the story and not just reading facts like some other historical podcasts (and also make it funny) - I absolutely love it !
  • mshapr01
Everything about this is top shelf
I’m a guy who could listen to someone read a well-written script in a shed. Not only are these well written scripts, they are well read, well edited, with outstanding background audio. Exceptionally well done. These podcasts are more story narratives than most history podcasts. These would have a broader appeal than typical podcasts. I don’t begrudge the commercials and appeals for subscription sign ups. This kind of quality costs money!

    Living Room Visit
The podcast has given me such joy! It’s as if I’m having friends in my home and we’re just chatting! I’m very interested in the explanations he shares and the sources he uses to bring this historical era alive for everyone!

    Entertaining and easy to follow!
This is my favorite history podcast! I’ve spent the last week binging all the seasons. Definitely recommend to lovers of history!

    My new favorite!
My new favorite show. I love the way Dan makes it very entertaining .
  • Let's get caffeinated
    Amazing
I love this show - absolutely - but for the love of all logical things, please fix the season for the iron king and season 5 of a dynasty to die for so they do not combine into season five. Disregard - it’s been fixed since yesterday. Thank you to everyone who helps with this podcast!

    Can’t get enough
This is by far my favorite podcast—informative, engaging and funny to boot. Seasons 1-4 with Dan Jones (plus subscriber issues—well worth the cost—are on repeat). Season 5 with Danièle Cybulskie has been an unexpected pleasure. More please!
  • Mimirima
    Episodes won’t play
I was loving this podcast but the episodes from Season One starting with 11 won’t play. I tried Season Two and those won’t play either. Very frustrating
  • Juliana73
    Excellent!!
Love, love, love this podcast! I must admit that I was a bit nervous when Dan Jones went on a bit of a hiatus, and Danièle Cybulskie took over for six episodes. However, my fears were allayed. Daniéle is a master storyteller (as is Dan), and I thoroughly enjoyed the foray into Philip the Fair’s story. Keep up the good work. I can’t wait to get ahold of some of your books to delve even further into the history of the Plantegenets and their medieval world.

    Love it
I love this show! Dan I think your idea in that ad of a “hotties from history” calendar is fantastic I would order 100 of them. Thanks for another great season! :)

    Why change the host?
Fascinating podcast until season 5. Cannot stand the voice of the new host. Sadly stopped listening.

    Binged
Another top notch production from Dan Jones and crew. Like others I too am starting over and listening to every episode while waiting like a commoner for a new episode to drop. To anyone reading this and wondering if purchasing the extra bits is worth it?YES is the answer.

    Factually incorrect
I heard Dan on another history podcast I listen to. I found him engaging and thought I would give this a go. Production value is great, script is great - these are the only two reasons I’m giving it 3 stars. Season 1, Episode 4 states that William was the firstborn of Henry II and Eleanore of Aquitaine. This is completely incorrect. Their first born was indeed a Henry (commonly known as ‘the young king’) as he is crowned in the French style while his father is still alive. Dan makes a big deal out of Eustace NOT receiving this honour and Eleanore’s ‘autonomy’ in naming their first born “William”. By deleting Henry the young king from his account, Dan negates all the history that goes along with this - an escalating feud with Becket over the crowning, the young king given no authority on his own, which caused the first rebellion with Henry II’s sons, and the role of France in this antagonism and the early death of Henry the young king, just to name the highlights. Even “The Lion in Winter” - a fictional account - mentions Henry the young king. Very disappointed with the research team.

By far the best history podcast
I absolutely love this podcast. This could be a tv show. It is really great storytelling. I am not a huge fan of English history but this definitely got my attention. Please keep them coming! Update 5/28 - LOVE Dan Jones and the first 4 seasons. Was very much looking forward to the new season but I am not feeling the new host. The production quality is still great it’s just very difficult to listen to. Her voice doesn’t fit this type of content. Please bring back Dan!

    First Four Seasons are Fantastic!
Then the fifth season started and the host is AWFUL. She sounds like an AI voice reading a children’s book. I cannot hear the story through the voice. Very disappointing and have now stopped listening. Bring back Dan Jones!

Great podcast for the history buff
I binged all three seasons and enjoyed them so much that I plan to relisten to them.I also enjoyed the British Castles series on Netflix. Well done!

    Better than fiction.
The title here is a reference to Game of Thrones, which it’s been said was inspired by the War(s) of the Roses. It’s hard to out do the real life shenanigans of House Plantagenet, though. I have been fascinated by this dynasty since I was about 13 and received the Avalon Hills game, Kingmaker, for my birthday. I’ve read all books I can find on it. Several years ago, my wife gave me a copy of Dan’s “The Plantagenets,” which I reread during COVID. Gave me some perspective on things, for sure. Anyway, give this a listen. Each episode will leave you on the edge of your seat as you learn about these all too real, sometimes, larger than life royal characters. The subject here is middle to late medieval English history, a period of time dominated by the Plantagenet dynasty and includes some well-known historical figures such as Richard the Lionheart and his brother King John, both whom have made it onto the Disney screen, the unfortunate Thomas Beckett, Edward Longshanks (the villain in Mel Gibson’s “Braveheart) and eventually I presume, the notorious Richard the Third. However, it’s not just the male heirs to the English throne that we get treated to here. Dan brings out of the shadows the many amazing women who also shaped history, such as Eleanor of Aquitaine. There is so much more to come. The Black Prince. John de Gaunt. The rather feckless Henry VI and his ambitious Queen, Margaret of Anjou. The Lancaster and the Yorks. The lost Innocents. I can hardly wait. I am pretty familiar with this history, but Dan has made each episode so vibrant that it just comes alive through his fantastic narration. Just give it a listen. You’ll be hooked.
  • Just a bit more time…!
    Please!
I absolutely love Season 1 (almost finished), with only one irk. In a too short episode of 20 minutes, the ads take up 3-4 minutes. I’ll consider the “ever being reminded of” Subscriber $ further along, but it’s getting irritating enough trying to spend my 30 minutes of free time navigating through 2-3 episodes!
