“How one many rebuilt his life, 100 miles at a time”
Loved the “How one man rebuilt his life, 100 miles at a time” episode! It was my first listen for this podcast but definitely not my last. Such a good story and fascinating insight into life after prison for all these people.

    Plain stupidity or misinformation?
So much misinformation spread in the anti black Latinos episodes. You should know what those words mean in Spanish or at least in Mexico.

    Appreciation post
Thank you so much for bringing these insightful stories to us all. The one I just listened to was the one with Caesar in regard to his walk after prison, it’s good to hear that America is starting to bring light and proactive solutions to reduce recidivism. I hope to listen to more of this podcast. Lucy you did an amazing job!

    Yes to local journalism!
I appreciate the local journalism especially on topics that we don’t get to hear from elsewhere. Will keep listening!

I was pretty excited to learn about this podcast… But then
During the introduction to the first podcast episode, the obviously female host feels the need to introduce her pronouns. *Immediate unfollow*

Loved the “Coyote” episode. I was wondering if you have seen how Disney covered “The Issues of Coyote” in their movies and shows……

    People vs Emily Guerin
Emily Guerin is so mealy-mouthed (and vaguely an apologist for racist, entitled behavior) in the People vs Karen episode. She goes so far as to rue that a white woman’s feeeeelings are on trial. Spoiler: it was her actions that were on trial. And her actions endangered the reputations and lives of two innocent people of color. Ms Guerin’s entire take is pathetic. Shame that she’s on the air.

    Surprisingly Amateurish
Feels more like a college radio show than a professional podcast. The hard left political angle, as well as the chicken little climate “crisis” screeching that infuse every aspect of the show, as well as long pauses that make me think the show ended or dropped out, the horrible reading skills of the hosts, improper pronunciation, and childish sounding speaking voices (interspersing sentences with “like”) all add up to a particularly inept cavalcade of ineptitude.
  • Ohana Aloha
    Flimsy
There’s almost nothing to the magic castle episodes, maybe that’s the point. A slight of hand, an illusion of a story. Needs so much more than a couple of opinions.
  • evanseesred
Lots of fun, but not journalism.
The music, the production, all top notch. But this is hardly journalism as it’s rife with errors, omissions and misleading information. For instance, in one of the first episodes, the greatest offense they level at the castle is that the adjacent hotel posted a pro-law enforcement social media post. What they fail to mention is that this hotel is entirely unaffiliated with the magic castle. While it shares a name, the ownership and management is completely different. Something that, even the most cursory amount of investigation would have revealed. This type of “mistake” is the norm in this podcast that is more about telling a story than getting things right. But if you want to hear about the horrors of being called sir when you are a woman, about the trauma of having a white male (gasp!) lead a seance in the Houdini room, and just feel good about your own halo and enlightenment, this is the show for you!

    Nuri Martínez Podcast
I think this discussion does promote some awareness but completely misses the mark in having Afrolatinos included in the discussion of anti Blackness in the Latino community. We DO exist. We ARE in Los Angeles and Latinos are NOT a monolith. This podcast fails to educated on the comments that were harmful to Black Latinos within their communities.
  • cw_pdx
    Karen pod - worst yet
On top of the obviously click baiting use of the racist ‘Karen’ euphemism, all the pod accomplished is a painful rehash of an incident that had been swiftly identified by local law enforcement, and where the “mom fluencer” Sorensen was held accountable. I have yet to see any actual data that suggests white women falsely report crimes based on race at any higher rate than other demographic groups, although this season peddles that exact notion.

    My new favorite podcast
Great show with real journalistic integrity. So many times broadcast news drops a story once the headlines are pushed out by the newest topic with no follow up. This podcast does a deep dive into the stories that affect all of us and the way we move forward as a society.

This podcast is seriously amazing! The thoroughness and thoughtfulness of the reporting is impressive. Thank you for reporting on these issues. I love the local perspective.

    Nury Martinez
Before listening to the episodes featuring Ms. Martinez I didn’t have an opinion about her work but of course had read the press about the tapes of the LA City Council meeting. After hearing this podcast I came away thinking while (obviously) wrong what Ms. Martinez (and her male colleagues) said, her apologies feel sincere. And i kept thinking, why have the men not been held to the same account? Whether or not there is a similar podcast-accounting of the men, I wish Ms. Martinez grace and good will in the future. She made a terrible mistake, has repeatedly apologized, and should be provided the same “second chance” most adults say they wish anyone who has made a grievous error should have.

    Thank you
I really appreciate this thoughtful exploration of this explosion in LA politics. LA has a lot of work to do to eliminate racism, anti-blackness and colorism. These are the conversations that are desperately needed.

    Please, edit
I have generally appreciated this podcast, but the latest series on Nury Martinez should have been a quick 30 minutes instead of 3 hours. So much time was wasted on exposition of clips that were just played.

    Great journalism
This is so important and so well done. The ex-Pres is clearly deferring and the interviewer does an excellent job of emphasizing this, while yet not shutting down conversation. The audience gets to learn things anyway, in spite of it all. And the knowledge brought to the interviews by the interviewer is invaluable. Thank you!

Not Just What Happened But Why It Happened
A year after LA Council President Nury Martinez was mired in a career ending scandal, she comes to the microphone to try and explain the remarks that were surreptitiously recorded during a fateful covert meeting with colleagues intent on redistricting the City of Los Angeles in a manner most favorable to their careers. This is a true journalistic coup and left the august LA Times reduced to recounting the podcast’s reporting. It’s a fascinating look behind the scenes of a City Council which saw 8 of its 15 members disgraced in less than five years. Highly recommended.

Terrific reporting of a difficult subject
Just listened to part 3 of Nury and the Secret tapes. I appreciate your delving into this issue and covering the racism that exists within the Latinx community. Looking forward to Antonia’s continuing reporting & the next installment.
  • Hjrdgf864
I hoped they would hold Nurys feet to the fire more
But so far they aren’t really holding her accountable. She’s doing the classic politician trick of not asking the question that was asked but answering the question she wants to answer and they don’t push back at all. So far she’s chalking her racist remarks up to having a bad day.

    Great work, but….
I wish we could start referring to people from Latin America and of Latin American descent as that: Latin American Its the most accurate and appropriate way to refer to us. Its already gender neutral, and it recognizes us as american.

    Get on with it
I love the premise, I want to love this series. Unfortunately it feels like 80% of each episode is replays from previous episodes with very little new content.

    Great
Hearing more about the Guru Jagat story made me cackle honestly. Bless her heart. Season 1 definitely made me want to punt all the the self victimizing neighbors. Frustratingly typical arguments from hard-headed people preventing necessary care because they have some fantasy that permanent supportive housing is The Ritz for Free™️. We’re sliding back into the age of dumping undesirables into asylums just to not see them, lest we face our deep seated guilt over not trying at all to solve the housing crisis. Safe housing is a human right and I’m sure plenty of the naysayers thump bibles in their free time while spreading their bogus hysteria.

Informative info in the age of misinformation
Great series that was shedding further light into the bizzarO super cult experience our nation drifted into and the inherent dangers of misinformation and magic thinking and how/why some groups were/are more susceptible to it. I’m still waiting for next episode!? Will there be another? Love your podcasts!

Why the Delay in Episode Releases?
I’m engrossed in Season 4 of this podcast, but why are the release dates so inconsistent? I’m guessing the entire season is finished, as this podcast is not an ongoing story requiring constant updates. So why aren’t they dropping the new episodes weekly? I don’t get it.

    Fact check
This podcast was ok, but saying things like “Ozone may seem extreme” & “ivermectin doesn’t work” rubbed me the wrong way. Ozone is the best thing you could do for the immune system & is very common in Europe. Also, ivermectin has been proven to work to help the body fight “…” you get my gist.

    Very Nice Work!
I was part of the Gurujagat and Harijiwan clan because I ran Tej Kaur’s studio, Nine Treasures Yoga for about 8 years. This podcast was not mud slinging sensationalism, it was unbiased and fact based. Thank you for your contribution to this discussion. Congratulations on great journalism. 🙏🏽🥂

The guru Jagat pod was hilarious - I was human trafficked by her for years (forced labor). She was a nutcase & extremely dangerous. Good riddance.

  • Observing the Chaos
Making something out of absolutely nothing.
I just binged “the forgotten revolutionary” when it appeared in my feed through the Norco ‘80 podcast. I wish I could get my time back. There is absolutely nothing here. A middling college student participates in some campus cultural activities becomes awoken to larger socioeconomic and political ideas and gets his own radio show. This is not special and hardly “revolutionary” Student loses direction and focus and starts drinking too much. This is too is unfortunately not special or unique. Heavily intoxicated student falls accidentally where dozens of heavily intoxicated college students have fallen for decades. This too is sadly not unique or special and certainly not revolutionary. Tying these events to some larger cultural movement is a stretch at best. This is a sad tale but there is absolutely zero compelling evidence to suggest this was a murder and the way the sheriff is communicating may be distasteful and worthy of discussion it isn’t racist and to suggest otherwise is irresponsible in this case and makes it seem like the podcaster is just trying to say gotcha after creating a no win situation for the sheriff’s department. I have empathy for this family but they need a therapist not a podcaster. What was the point of this exercise? Who benefitted from dredging up what are nothing but old rumors and family’s grieving denial. I’d suggest that if the podcaster wants to do a podcast about Chicano culture or his own Origen story then he should do so.

A Great Listen and a Timely Retelling
I really enjoyed the first season about Oscar Gomez. I’m majoring in Chicanx Studies at UC Berkeley at the moment and I find myself in a very similar situation as Oscar—having the drive to labor for the movement but not for the university. It’s a very repressive and depressive experience to be a Xicanx immersed in Chicanx Studies at an institution that is designed to exclude you, and to learn about the systems that shaped a great part of your circumstances (I.e., oppression, exclusion, precarity). It’s also very interesting to learn about internal politics within the movement then and now. Listening to the this podcast motivated me to keep extracting knowledge from the institution while remaining critical. I appreciate the podcast because it reinforces our historical consciousness. The podcast is about Oscar but Oscar became so much more than a person, so the podcast is about so much more than Oscar. It’s about all the things he stood for.

All Chicanx Studies Students Should Listen
This was a beautiful story about losing someone when they were far too young. Oscar was a courageous soul and it saddens me that his light was cut short. His student activism and his fight for social justice should not be forgotten. Thanks for telling his story so that others can learn from his example.

    Heartfelt story
This heartfelt investigation tells a story of an impactful young person’s too short life. It starts as a mystery story about his death, but in truth becomes a retelling of his life. It provides context of the time and nuances people were going through, and how it relates to the present struggles and growth. And although it is called forgotten, he clearly is not forgotten by those he touched and those who heard his show. Their stories make you wonder how the world would be different had he lived to spread his words to more people. I couldn’t stop listening.

    Compelling Storytelling
If you live in LA, you’ve been fortunate to hear Adolfo’s news and culture reporting on KPCC for 2 decades. But who IS this guy, who’s low-level famous enough to be name-dropped on an episode of the Simpsons? This is a story told with the subtle and sophisticated reportage that the best podcasts are made of: a true crime podcast, a dive into the history of Chicano activism in the 1990s, and an insightful telling of the stories of two people: Oscar Gomez and Adolfo himself. Adolfo discovers that he cannot tell Oscar’s story without delving into his own history in a parallel telling that enriches the whole enterprise. Growing up as an undocumented Mexican in California, Adolfo examines themes of mystery, tragedy, identity and success with compassion and reflection. Highly recommended.

    The Forgotten Revolutionary season 2
It was a gorgeous story about the grieving of a family and a community who needed answers and justice for the loss of their beloved Oscar Gomez. Adolfo, the host and investigative journalist, did an incredible job of retelling a story. It made me cry and had me on edge with some twists and turns. I highly recommend!
