Was I In A Cult?

1,939

Hosted by Tyler Measom and Liz Iacuzzi, Was I In A Cult? is a documentary-style podcast showcasing individuals who have been in, and most importantly, successfully left a cult. Told first-hand by the experiencer themself, these are raw, riveting and inspirational tales of what it means to be a survivor. Using levity and info-tainment, the show humanizes the cultic experience and may leave some of our listeners asking themselves…“Wait…Was I In A Cult?” If you or someone you know has been in a cult and want to share your story, contact us at info@wasiinacult.com. We'd love to hear from you.

    LOTS of ads now
I’ve been listening to this show since basically the beginning. I do enjoy most of it, but the amount of ads in the last few shows is pretty wild. It’s frustrating. I understand they have to make money but it’s distracting. It felt like if the episodes weren’t split into two and contained so many ads it would be much better. Capitalism ruins everything.

    Love the guests
All the episode topic and guests are very interesting so but the hosts cutting in with their comments and jokes are waaaay too much and really ruins this.

    I appreciate this pod
I’m glad this pod shines a light on the not so obvious but then glaringly obvious cults inside churches and direct marketing. Raised pentacostal and the cult leaders aka “prophets” were a plenty. Keep up the real ‘lords work’ in exposing it all

    The best!
There are a lot cult podcasts I follow, but something about Tyler and Liz just does it for me. I love how they banter, laugh, and specifically how guests are never victimized and judged. This is a podcast about healing & positivity after horrendous experiences and trauma. The jokes and mocking of cults really overjoys my heart.

    Mostly Enjoyable
The hosts think they’re hilarious but pretty much any time they’re trying to be funny it’s massively cringe. Like really bad. But if you’re willing to just roll your eyes at the very dumb jokes, or make frequent use of the skip button, this is a really refreshing approach to the ubiquitous cult podcast. I like the idea of taking clips of the guests and interjecting the hosts’ commentary and reaction rather than the normal q&a format. I just wish they’d make those interjections more substantive and rely less on bad jokes.

    Enlightening
Listening and learning about cult think and manipulation opens your eyes to how prevalent these actions and behaviors are all around you.

    Annoying jokes
Episodes generally good except for the parts where the hosts are talking. Gotta fast forward past the cringey banter.

I use to love. Gone so far down hill I rarely listen anymore. Zzz

    Favorite culty podcast!
Love love love this podcast. When the new episode drops, I do a lil dance of joy. The humor, music references and genuine connection makes the trauma of cult survival seem less daunting.

    Helped starting my life over
The past four years I have been recovering from my cult experience that lasted 20 years of my life. There are many things that help me go from having nothing to now having an amazing career and now by my very own home. Something that I thought would never happen. One of the biggest things that help me in my recovery is Liz and Tyler and their amazing podcast Was I In A Cult? I can’t thank you enough. Your podcast truly showed me how to normalize my situation. And be able to look at it in a different light and also help me to know that I am not alone. From the bottom of my heart, I couldn’t be more grateful. You to are a huge part of how much I have achieved. From one of your faithful listeners. Thank you so much. Christopher Sullivan .

    Learning without being preachy
Listened to this podcast from day one. Great storytelling and education without it feeling like a lecture. I really like the support offered to the folks telling their stories. Keep up the great work WIIAC!

I look forward to this podcast every week. I love learning about cults, and I love laughing so if you do too then listen to this show!

    Light hearted trauma!
But seriously, this pod does a great job of bringing people’s traumatic experiences to light while the banter helps bring it to a place of real life. The juxtaposition reminds you that this is a thing that can happen to anyone. Recommended, especially if you enjoy first hand story telling.

    Love this podcast
I listen to WIIAC on my way home from work. Always find the subject matter interesting and Tyler and Liz’s banter entertaining.

    Really don’tLike the hosts
Love the content and the guests, very much dislike the hosts. I didn’t know this was classified as a comedy podcast. I try my best to skip the narrations but they can drone on.

    Love this pod!
I’ve been a listener since the beginning and love this show. I listen every week during my commute and it is the highlight of my morning. I enjoy all of Tyler’s fun facts and Liz’s interjections! Never, ever end this show! We need you people doing the real work in spilling the tea about cults and calling them OUT!!!!!!!!

    Love!
I love this podcast! They are so genuine when it comes to their guests, and are very funny and always poking fun at the bad guys. I love their banter and friendship. And the guests always have a great story to tell.

    I love Tyler and Liz!
I have listened to this show forever and I honestly love it. I appreciate the lighthearted approach to such tough topics. I know it may not be everyone’s approach but there’s content for the haters elsewhere. Keep at it yall!

    Fascinating and funny
As someone who was (also) raised Mormon and was unfortunately in the cult of the parent narcissist this show is fascinating. The hosts are both funny and serious when needed. Also feel free to use me to fact check Tyler’s Mormon facts from the side of a woman ;) (At my church they said burning bosom but said it correctly FYI)
  • angelachristineg
    Great show!
I was in a marriage that was basically a cult, and all of these stories really confirmed that for me. The hosts can be a bit annoying at times, but I mostly find them enduring and funny and it’s mostly the person telling their story.

    This last episode…
This episode. Had this grown man crying in my office. My brother is bipolar and schizophrenic. This helped a lot and thank you Vida. That tiger bar goes hard.

    Wonderful show!
This is such a delightful show! It’s wonderful to hear the stories from cult survivors, and it’s extra wonderful to hear the wonderful hosts! Loving those facts and trivia 🥰

    One of the best!
I look forward to Mondays & new episodes! Their ability to find people from all walks of life & all types of cults truly shows the damage that cults, its leaders, and members can do. I love the opportunity and voice they give to survivors to share their stories and continue in their healing journeys!

    Love this pod!
The hosts are great at creating a space that lets each guest tell their story with the amount of grace and humor that each needs in the moment. I’ve learned so much from so many different perspectives, and am so glad Liz and Tyler (and Rob!) give the guests and listeners a platform to learn and grow. Additionally, Tyler’s MAWG “Fun facts!” Make my husband’s weird rock trivia (He is a fellow MAWG and musician) a little easier to deal with since I can shock him with my own 🤣🤣. Thanks to you all. Keep the episodes coming!

    Love the podcast
Fantastic show, I grew up in a cult and I love their humorous take on the subject. after all, if you can’t laugh about it, what’s the alternative?

    Exceptional
This is by far my favorite podcast. I love the banter and even Tyler’s stupid facts. This podcast is a good time to

Nasty ol’ haters back off - this show is great.
So many negative reviews! If you don’t like it, just don’t listen. A couple people here are just trying to fulfill a dream and make a difference and by leaving some snark review you’re hurting that. Just don’t listen 🤷🏻‍♀️ This show is great and it’s also healing. I grew up in a cult and always struggled with my experience until finding this show and finding solidarity. They’ve got some dry humor, some jokes, some fun facts. Listen if you like, leave em alone if you don’t. 🤍

    All the things
As a Assemblies of God cult survivor I really appreciate hearing other people stories which validates that I’m not crazy… I really was in a cult. The lighthearted moments interjected in between keep me from crying too much. When Liz points out the ‘classic cult’ tactics I remember my own experiences. Thank you Tyler &Liz for doing this podcast!!!

    AI editing?
I used to listen regularly but something has definitely changed. I think it’s that AI bots now do the editing on so many podcasts like this now. It sounds so weird at times and the ad placements are jarring. Could still be a fun podcast to listen to if it had some editing (to cut out some of the bad banter if nothing else). Focus on the story.

    Ok but….
I listen to Was I in a Cult? on a monetized platform. Upwards of eleven minutes of commercials is excessive. Kinda funny but more focus on the topic is needed. And the definition of what is actually a cult is being stretched to the limits. I think they’re running out of material.
  • Sanna🤝
    I love!!!
alright i don’t understand why everyone is getting so mad about “making light” of people’s stories with the dark humor and the random jokes. don’t you guys understand that, that is the point to this podcast!! NOT GIVING POWER TO THESE CULTS. tyler says it in every intro maybe if you would’ve listened to the actual intro you would understand. you don’t have to love it but don’t hate on the podcast for being the podcast.
  • me brook
    Unlistenable
Super bummed. Thought I had a new podcast to listen to. Came here from What Happened Next. I just don’t like the format at all. Supposed to be funny? Well, it’s definitely not. I couldn’t tell when an ad started or ended, it all sounds like a weird commercial. Couldn’t understand the story. Very odd
  • AngDevMac
    REALLY?!?
I’ve listen to this show for years. Enjoyed the banter…I found it refreshing for a cult podcast. I’ve been off my podcasts train for a while now and decided to catch up and OMG…I’m so disappointed that they would push their political beliefs on their listeners. I listen to escape not to be indoctrinated. Sounds like Tyler’s still in a cult! So sad, I won’t be listening anymore.
  • Hass326
    More guest less host?
I feel like something has changed this season, way too much interruption with irrelevant trivia facts. Earlier seasons didn’t have as much. Don’t fix it if it’s not broken guys. Hanging in there for now hoping that it’s just growing pains.
  • Nichole and miko
    Please stop talking
The content of the show really is good, but the banter is abysmal. It’s forced and clunky with the host talking over each other constantly and making just awful jokes. Please just stick to the content.
  • PearlFruit
    10/10 cringe
What is up with the embarrassingly cringe jokes while talking about super serious topics? Couldn’t make it through one episode. I think the hosts think they are portraying dark humor, which is an art to nail and a fine line to successfully walk. At best the hosts remind me of teenage toilet humor. It’s just not for me. Maybe it is for you.

    Bad Jokes Interrupting Important Stories
The hosts add in bad jokes that are ill-timed and often make light of the guest speaker’s trauma. It’s off-putting, unfunny, and undermines the seriousness of the topics being discussed. Much better cult podcasts out there.
  • De7inmangaman
    I don’t like it
You guys should just have a natural conversation. Instead of editing it after the fact. Cuz u stop the account of the speaker and comment on it and know things that are said for hand. This convo does sound genuine
  • jmcdanny2019
    Stay out of politics
You lost me and many others when you put your political beliefs out there and your presidential pick! Good grief…you think people care! We listen for an escape! Not to hear your opinions of non related subjects. Bummer as this was entertaining. Unsubscribed!
  • Lildazeed
    I listen to the ads
I appreciate the content you provide! As a stay at home mom I’m usually knee deep in cleaning, diapers, cooking, snacks, and everything else to change the ads so i got you guys! Thank you for providing me with a good laugh and entertainment on busy Monday mornings! Best podcast!
  • DoubleAMama
    Over It
I like hearing about actual cults. But between the hosts constantly interrupting, and their incessant need to snark on all religion, especially Christianity, I’m over this show. There are better, more in depth, cult shows out there.

    Platforming TERFs
I thought I knew you. If you let TERFs in your podcast it becomes a TERF podcast You let a TERF break your format to rant about how much she didn’t like BDSM for two hours. You didn’t push back at all. She didn’t even tell her story like everyone else does. I have listened since day one. I think about Tyler’s Mormon experience a lot. But I just can’t understand your motivation.
  • SmoothTrunkfish
    One of the best podcasts
Amazing stories that will give you perspective, laughs, life lessons and hope. Oh and lots of random classic rock knowledge for some reason. Seriously, start at episode 1, you’ll be completely hooked!
  • LQ222
Look forward to it every week!
I love this show and look forward to it every week! The stories are interesting and guests are super generous sharing. Hosts are silly and I love their friendship. This jovial vibe is appreciated while wanting to absorb the stories of others which carry trauma. There are some reviews that say the host. Tell too many jokes and don’t take the trauma of others seriously. First, take note that all the guests interviewed have had an opportunity to listen to the show and are themselves into it! Additionally, I think many of we survivors would Convey that after a point in a healing trajectory, humor is the only way to continue to move forward in life with optimism. For that reason, I personally really appreciate the levity. Please also remember that the hosts have both survived their own cult experience. I honor their need to tackle these subjects with humor So if humor is not your thing combined with trauma, maybe you won’t love this podcast and that’s OK. There are lots of other cult podcasts out there. But if you’re a person who understands there are multiple ways to cope with different experience experiences, this is for you.
  • JW543
Listen for the guests, not the hosts
The guests on this show make it great. But the hosts are clearly way too into themselves—of course the new branding features their faces! This podcast should be less of them. Yet lately, we’ve gotten more. Feels like telling victims’ stories is now priority #2. Hope that changes.
  • valdessc
    liz & ty!
love you both. love this show. i’ve never been in a cult but my goodness - way to open your audience’s eyes! love the jokes and the back & forth between yall. you guys really have good chemistry and im here for it!
  • P. Fenton Cosgrove
    Guests Are Interesting
The guests are super interesting but the hosts joke way too much about very serious issues. When they do try to be serious they put on these overly dramatic voices. There seems to be no rhyme or reason between when they joke and when they’re serious. It feels disrespectful.
  • Rebe901
    I love this show
I love this show so much. I love the hosts and the guests. And while is scared me that there are cults everywhere and anyone can fall victim I will just keep listening.
  • carebearjohn
Let them speak - too much annoying banter
These hosts are so obnoxious it ruins the entire story. I was recommended this podcast because cults are fascinating and I couldn’t even get through one episode.
