Missing in Alaska

201
True Crime #239

Missing in Alaska is a deep dive into the mysterious disappearance of Congressmen Hale Boggs and Nick Begich, whose plane vanished in Alaska in 1972. Despite the largest search in American history, no sign of the men ever surfaced. Officials blamed ice, and a nation consumed with Watergate and Vietnam quickly moved on. Two decades later, a murderer and bomber with mafia ties made a startling claim to the F.B.I.: The plane was bombed. Was he lying? Journalist Jon Walczak, who has investigated the case since 2011, travels from Arizona to the Arctic Circle trying to uncover the truth.

    Fantastic
I listened to the one about Arizona first and it was terrible. I live is Alaska so I have this one a chance. It was well worth the listen. Very interesting!

    Loved this podcast!
I found this podcast a couple years after it was released, but I loved it. Really enjoyed the story telling and the investigation.

    I love this podcast!
This is such an interesting and well researched show. This is the best of all the “missing” podcasts. It had me on the edge of my seat! I really trust this team to present all the sides to the story. Plus I love Alaska and want to hear more about it!

    Highly respect this journalism
Jon Walczak is a dogged investigative journalist. He looks at every angle and follows cases for years before publishing. I have heard all three seasons of his Missing series and the quality and perseverance is persistent throughout. I have so much respect for this body of work. I hope all of the cases Mr Walczak has covered get solved!

    Episode 10
Who goes to find a plane in WATER without a SONAR!? … you took a vacation to Alaska… not a trip to look for a plane.. total BS… you had me till episode 10. Now you are doing entertainment journalism. And it’s a shame because where there’s smoke there’s fire. COMEON DUDE…. Shameful … I mean.. seriously…. What a JOKE… like I said you took a VACATION to Alaska…. No one cares you saw a bear…. Get real. You are WORSE than the FBI… incredible… BTW!!! Never mentioned checking with ALASKA STATE POLICE about take section ! Incredible…/

    Captivating from start to finish!
If you’re into gripping true crime stories with a touch of mystery, Missing in Alaska is a must-listen. The storytelling is top-notch, and you can tell a lot of care has gone into researching each case. Highly recommend checking it out!

    Top rate, fascinating
Just the right amount of detail, this story moves but is still thorough. Compelling topic and a great podcaster.

Honestly this pod deserves 5 stars!
Idk why people are rating it so low. Jon should win the Pulitzer Prize for this!!
  • ThrasherY
    Mostly Commercials
30 minute runtime with at least 10 minutes of commercials. Ugh

    Favorite True Crime Podcast
Jon is an incredibly thorough and thoughtful journalist. Love this podcast and the adventure he takes us on!!

    A painful listen.
This could have and should have been three episodes. There is far too much repetitive blabber. I don’t know why this wasn’t heavily edited. Also, this is extremely close to sleaze journalism. It’s not a good sign when the writer repeatedly feels the need to defend his work.

    Thoroughly Investigated
Great look back of historical events shrouded in mystery with mafia association.

    Eh
Started out good, but after 4 episodes he is just grabbing at straws and endlessly discussing things that don’t pertain to the story, clearly to sell more terrible casino adds because each episode is chock full of them. Should have stopped at 3 episodes. Had I not been lying in bed sick with a cold, I would have.

One of the best I’ve listened to
This is one of the best true crime podcasts I have listened to. I even check monthly, or even weekly, to see if Jon Walczak has released any new shows.

A strong and fascinating podcast, but flawed
This is a beautifully researched and produced podcast, and the host is capable enough vocally speaking, but why the aversion to editing? This story could be much tighter. There’s just too much undigested conversation and verite action. The unbelievably slow and repetitive conversation with the last HAM operator in that bonus episode is a good example. The chat on the boat when they were looking for the plane is another example. I could have used half that. Were it not for this extra weight, I would’ve rated it five stars. As another reviewer wrote, the ads are indeed horrible, and they have a very big footprint within this production. I still greatly appreciate the massive and rigorous work this journalist put into researching and developing this story. This is an epic effort, and despite its flaws, it’s still an excellent podcast about a fascinating mystery. “The Island” episode got even worse after I first wrote this review! I heard about everything from the host’s desire for dinner, then the fact that they had just eaten breakfast, something about his sock - every bit of random chat seem to be worth including. I’m surprised he didn’t include info about his bowel movements. Dude, this is a good story, but you’re trying your best to drown it in irrelevant detail.

    Nothing burger
Poor narrative, journalism that doesn’t feel objective and lacks connective tissue. I wanted to buy in to the theory but there was never even a semblance of enough supporting evidence. This podcast takes a testimony from decades ago and adds nothing to it despite trying very hard.

    Excellent podcast
I really love crazy conspiracy mystery crime drama type stuff. This one is up there with the best.

    Episode 5
Show just started to grab my attention and then 15 minutes into episode 5 the audio just crapped out. Tried to remove download and redownload multiple times to no avail. Anyone else have this issue?

Great podcast but what why 5 condom ads?!
Great podcast, love the narrator, love the audio interludes. But I fricking hate recommending it to anyone with the condom and pleasure ads every five seconds. Otherwise I would tell all true-crime-loving friends to listen.

    Good stuff
I have a lot of respect for this journalist and the lengths he will go to investigating his “Missing in….” podcasts (the 9/11 one was thorough and haunting). I took off one star for all the times we are to endure 3 full minutes of advertiser content about whisper thin, textured magnum condoms, the minor saving grace being that the voice cadences of the advertisements are so different from the podcast narrator’s that you can skip ahead some. The first few times they played I thought there was an error and I was hearing them on loop.

Wordy-Author needs to pity his listener
Too wordy. Too much backstory. Get to the point and stop trying to have air space.

    Solid Content but excessive ad-breaks
Good content for those who enjoy true-crime genre documentary-style podcasts. I greatly appreciate pods that go to the effort of interviewing (and otherwise using) primary sources and using those interviews in the pod. That said, each individual ad break on this pod is about a solid 2 minutes of prepackaged ads. On the Alaska season, that means about (and greater than) 4 minutes per episode, and on the missing on 9/11 series (the other season) most episodes actually had 3 ad breaks, and I think they had at least 6 minutes per episode of ad breaks. That’s probably the largest ad break to episode content in the pod for literally any of the hundreds (maybe thousands) of pods I’ve ever listened to. I have no problem listening to ad breaks, even pre packaged sound bite ads and such, but they really are very excessive in length and at the end of many episodes I was left feeling shorted on content in general, and more specifically felt there was minimal content between the mid roll ad break and the ads at the end, and by the way, multiple of the ads would be repeating parts of the ads and cut off in the middle creating weird nonsense advertising.

Mindful storytelling, unnecessarily long in spots
The narrator is an intent, mindful storyteller. Good story. I’m at episode 10 and it’s a waste. Almost nothing useful at all. It’s like a personal blog in some episodes rather than getting on point that the investigation is long, tedious and frequently filled with dead ends that aren’t worth such attention. Really enjoyed it until this Geraldo Rivera-esque episode 10. Feels like the entire podcast could have been completed in 10 episodes.

    Loved It
Great podcast for any tru crime fan. Loved the narrative and host was not bad but I just think the show was really well thought out and put together. Looking forward to what this team puts out next

    Riveting!
Awesome podcast that will leave you yearning for the truth. A must listen! Great story telling by Jon. Missing on 9/11 is just as good.

    Obsessed
I think this may be my favorite podcast of all time. I’m having a second listen through now, but the storytelling is great. The way John can paint pictures of not only the scenery but the people involved, really struck me. The historical aspect is also very fascinating. It’s definitely worth a listen (or two or three)

    Deep Dive
I had never heard of this possible conspiracy. Host takes us through all the facts to arrive at a possible conclusion. Loved the way you did a review every so often... it’s hard not to get lost in the names/places and facts vs. theory.

    Great pod!
Missing in Alaska is one of the most riveting podcasts I’ve ever listened to. Kudos to the producers!

    Great podcast!
In my opinion, BBC and CBC podcasts are superior to anything Americans produce. This is an exception! Gripping, well written, well presented and well produced podcast. Right up there with the best.

    Gripping story.
I had never heard of this story before but I find it very interesting. Can’t wait to see what happens.
