We Didn't Start the Fire: The History Podcast

48

This brand new pop culture history podcast is nothing like anything you've heard before, and it's everything you need to understand the modern world. Katie Puckrik and Tom Fordyce, an American pop culture buff and a British music lover, have taken the smash-hit song by Billy Joel and turned it into a podcast. Billy lists 120 people, places, and things in 'We Didn't Start The Fire', and Katie and Tom will do an episode on every single one to create the most fascinating, random and original history of the post-war world. Over the next two and a half years, we're going to learn about politics, rock 'n' roll, sport, space, television, the Cold War, guided along the way by historians, eyewitnesses, and mega-fans. Billy started it. We're going to finish it. Follow us on Twitter and Instagram @spreadthatfire, email us at fire@crowdnetwork.co.uk, and go to spreadthatfire.com to buy merch.

    Fun & Informative
    A good listen!

    Fun listen.
Love the concept.i enjoy learning about historical figures and I’ve already learned that I didn’t know much! I’ll totally listen to the whole series. Unless I get tired of how much Katie wants to just talk about how everyone is abusive and awful.

    Stop saying “you know”
I really wanted to like this podcast. I think it’s a great premise. I started with the Peyton Place episode, and the guest is ridiculous. She says, “You know” every 3 words. It is impossible to listen to.

    Very Creative and Clever!
I know of Billy Joel and of this song, “We didn’t start the fire”, but it was very clever of the hosts to seize upon the lyrics to describe in detail the history lesson Mr.Joel was giving us. I really enjoy the podcasts, and will try to go through all of them. Keep up the great work. Highly recommended if interested in Cold War history. I would add that one of the co-hosts should keep her progressive, socialist political viewpoints to herself, as I could care less what her political opinions are and all of them are completely irrelevant to this podcast.

    Total liberal bias
I can’t take anymore of the total liberal bias of the co-host Katie. The final straw for me was the Bernie Goetz episode where she proclaims her disgust for people who possess legally owned firearms for self defense. She’s obviously lived a comfy white privileged life and has never been the victim of a violent crime. At this point I will unfollow and never recommend this podcast to anyone else.

    Katie
“Conveniently he gets Alzheimer's” - If you have ever known someone or had a family member who has had Alzheimer’s you would never be so foolish and callous and in this case hateful to say such a thing. Shame on you

Three stars because there’s no support line!
Go to the website via Apple links and there is no technical support. I haven’t been able to download the most recent episode since it became available on Thursday for subscribers. I’m a subscriber…but not anymore if I can’t even reach out and say, “Hi, can you help me with this episode?”

    The day the podcast died
I have followed We Didn’t Start the Fire from day one. Now I must bid a farewell to it. I refuse to pay to listen to a podcast that I have listened to for free for so long. You’ve made plenty off of adverts. Killing a wonderful thing.

    Junk history
Complete speculation and opinionated - lack of actual facts and draws erosion’s conclusions…

    Clueless starring katie puckrik
Interesting premise for a show, mini history of each lyric to Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire." The problem with the show is how obnixious the female host is. Lose the kazoo , I'm guessing her idea, stupid, obnixious and annoying. Zero self-awareness. She compared Ringo Starr to a donkey. Her attepts at humor are cringeworthy. Trust the experts or at least allow them to speak, far more interested in what the guest has to say on the topic than the hosts lame attepts at a joke or their personal backstory. Typical echo chamber, uber liberal agenda talking points. You would think that this being a history centered podcast they (the host) would have better nuanced perspective on modern issues. But alas it's Orangeman bad.

I never thought Billy Joel would teach me post-war history
I’m a huge fan of Katie Puckrik and came for her (shout out to her legendary fragrance reviews), and I stayed for the amazing slices of history in each episode. I’m starting from the beginning and still have quite a lot way to go, but I think the two hosts balance each other beautifully, they have wonderful, intelligent guests, and they bring a consequential cast of characters and events to life, educating me at every turn on figures in history I often knew little about. Well done!

    So fascinating!
The history of this podcast and the song have drawn me in since we studied it for history in 8th grade. I was so excited to find this podcast and really enjoy it! I’m on episode 35 and while the history and the guests are amazing, the female host is annoying and says a lot of things we don’t need to hear, and her constant trump bashing is annoying. We get you don’t like him, that’s fine, you don’t need to talk about it every. Single. Episode! All in all, I’m trying to ignore her commentary so I can enjoy the show!

Tiring political comparisons that have no basis
Constant unfounded comparisons to trump instead of talking about the topic on hand…. He talks like an idiot but made millions of peoples lives better to compare him to some of these animals is absolutely ridiculous!!

    Trump derangement
I was really excited to hear their take on the subjects. Within a few episodes I realized the lady hates at least half of America. Nope.
  • ?Why do I need a nickname??
    Great premise, Terrible host
Edit: Katie’s American bias is just so over the top in the latest episode on Castro: trying to hammer home this idea that he was manipulating his image, and ergo the only reason anyone could have supported him, ie just propaganda, while demonstrating how she (as she admits from the start!) has just eaten up the propaganda she grew up with! The guest even laughs when she busts out another rumor (every.episode.) about his wife, and she doubles down! Really great self awareness… /s Love the premise & hosts are (mostly) enjoyable. However, the longer I listen the more the Boomer comes out of Katie, and it’s really annoying. I’m genuinely amazed she’s lived in the UK for the last 40 years; she’s more stereotypically American than I am, an American! And I don’t want to listen to what she’s “read somewhere” and ultimately winds up being some salacious rumor that sounds ignorant. Or crude jokes to fill space. Let the guest speak. Other critique is that I question whether they couldn’t haven’t gotten a better “expert” for a couple of the episodes (boxing Dude), but overall enjoyable history topics pulled from the song.

    Good listen
Just started the podcast it’s really good! A lot of trump bashing but it’s their opinion and doesn’t take away from the history being taught! Best part their voices don’t annoy me and I can actually listen! I love the guest speakers!

Most entertaining history podcast I’ve listened to so far!!
It’s getting all 5 stars for me! I absolutely love Tom and Katie’s attitude towards all of the vast topics covered. I was never a big fan of the song but the constant kazoo rendition and deep dive into its numerous sources of inspiration have given me a newfound appreciation. So far I‘be made it to the Marilyn Monroe episode and I can already feel my understanding of society and the historical development of the world deepening. P.S All of the Trump bashing I’ve heard so far has been a really nice touch. All of the political episodes I’ve heard have really helped me process how we came to have such a hack for a president. :(

Great show - fun and educational
So a lot of people have pointed out the political commentary and opinions that seem out of place. I’m not of the same political ilk as Katie and Tom, but it’s their show - I’m not threatened by their opinions and I hope we always live in a world where one’s opinion can be expressed without retaliation. In the end, you’ll learn something, be entertained and it’s a lot of fun. Well put together - give it a go!

    My take
Absolutely find the history lesson fascinating, love the Billy Joel song concept, only gave 4 stars though, would have given five but all the Trump bashing is so unnecessary and detracts from the history lesson. I will continue until it becomes ridiculous, hopefully it won’t I’m just finishing the first Richard Nixon.

    Hag
Great idea for a podcast. Unfortunately the old hag’s pathetic Trump derangement syndrome ruins this within the first few episodes so I will now erase. Congratulations for destroying a clever concept for half the podcast population who just want simple entertainment and don’t give two ***** about your political leanings.

    Radical Leftism Run Amok
First…lose the kazoos. So grating, obnoxious, and annoying….second only to Katie’s voice. podcast that could’ve been a fun, educational and interesting subject from this great source (the song) is instead a platform for this gals radical leftism. Why do these people refuse to resist the urge to alienate half the population with their “anti-Trump” nonsense. I’m no Trump apologist, tone sure. But I don’t want my podcast infused seemingly most every episode like this woman’s radical political views (“communism which is it so bad anyway”) and attacking “anti-vaxxers” 🤣 in the McCarthy episode, for example. What?!? Is she high??It will be interesting to see if she draws any commentary on our 46th president and his inept VP.I anticipate a deafening silence on those points. 🙄And before you arrogantly dismiss this review, the point is not your politics. Just seeing “Rosenbergs,” where this repulsive woman states, that she is sympathetic towards people who choose communism as a “progressive utopian ideal” (sic) way of life (!!!). Very disturbing prospective. Need I say more? But the point is, left and right, keep your trap shut about your personal views. We the listeners don’t want to hear it in any form. 🤭

    Professional, fun, informative.

    History entertainment
What a great way to get dollops of history while enjoying Billy Joels music. After each episode i go to you tube and watch the musuc video. But the history is tremendous, totally eclectic but all strung together around the lyrics.
  • Spdrcr80
    Too political
I enjoy the historical aspects of the show, but I have a hard time with all the personal political comments. I realize that some of the song lyrics are political topics, but not everything has to be a personal commentary on former US Presidents and your feelings about them. I would give 5 stars, but those are my reasons why I can’t.
  • esmeralda169
    Kazoos are horrible. Really horrible.
I’m only on episode two but I may have to opt out. I love history and Billy Joel, so this premise is made for me. I really like the hosts, but seriously kill that kazoo. Whether I’m driving or just trying to relax I don’t want to keep my finger on the fast forward button. I’ll keep at it for a bit to see if they change that. If not I don’t think I can listen.
  • Morea311
History lesson is well done, presentation is lacking
A few episodes in and I certainly enjoy the history, but each guests microphone is AWFUL! It sounds like they’re underwater more than 50% if the time. **Update** This seems to have been addressed after the first few episodes. New grievance: Get off Trump. I’m here for history not your personal politics. I’m not a sympathizer nor affiliated with his party, but you it’s not at all relevant to the lyrical focus. Once or twice, sure, you can draw a similarity but you’re weaving your modern day opinions throughout historical objects or figures. Disappointing.

    Great
I’m really enjoying this podcast. The hosts are engaging and the guest selection has been excellent.
  • TGH1326
    Great song and great podcast
Katie and Tom are doing a history of my youth. Doing a really good podcast is hard but these two have knocked it out of the park (Joe Dimaggio ?)
  • Jd@livingston
    Was really enjoying it
But the constant attacks on President Trump became overwhelming by the time we hit Nixon that it became unlistenable. They need to get help for the Mir TDS.
  • it's just Gigi
    These two are so annoying
Interesting idea if you can get past the annoying hosts
  • nhtyson
    A brilliantly, hilariously informative romp.
