Hit Play Not Pause

518

Perimenopause and menopause hit active women differently. We have a different lifestyle and different goals. And we know our bodies. Whether you run and hike or do CrossFit and ski (or a little of everything!), you’ve had a way of eating and exercising that worked…until the menopause transition, when it all goes out the window as body composition changes, fatigue, body aches, sleepless nights, hot flashes, brain fog, mood swings, and low mojo blindside you out of the blue—despite doing everything right. Your doctor may (or may not) help with hormone replacement therapy. But what about all the active stuff you love? You’re already exercising and eating well. What you want is to feel and perform like you used to. That doesn’t mean fasting, swearing off carbs for life, or just slowing down. It means adjusting your nutrition, training, recovery, and mindset to work with your changing physiology as you hit this phase of life. And we’re here for it.At Hit Play Not Pause, we know the potential of women in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond, because we talk to elite athletes and everyday active women who are still hitting personal bests along with world-renowned sports dietitians, researchers, medical and menopause specialists to help you understand what’s happening under the hood during the menopause transition and more importantly, what you can do about it—from hormone therapy to heavy lifting and everything in between—to feel and perform your best.Host Selene Yeager is a health and science journalist with 30 years’ experience and more than two dozen books to her name. She also lives an active life as a former Ironman triathlete and professional mountain bike racer who still rides, runs, paddles, hikes, lifts, and through her work at Feisty Menopause helps others do the same. This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Spotify Ad Analytics - https://www.spotify.com/us/legal/ad-analytics-privacy-policy/Podcorn - https://podcorn.com/privacyPodscribe - https://podscribe.com/privacy

    A must for midlife women
Selene has a knack for bringing on guests who are knowledgeable about the issues midlife women want to hear about. If you want to hear truly authentic conversations about how to navigate midlife then this is the podcast for you!

    Fabulous conversation!
I love and appreciate all the shows I listen to on Hit Play not Pause but I want to say it was an absolute pleasure to listen to your conversation with Jeanette McGill. As a woman who has climbed some high peaks and who aspires to climb more, I learned so much from hearing from you both. Thank you!

    The BEST
Recently discovered Hit Play Not Pause and holy moly. Thank you Selene for your work, your honesty, for being real, and for bringing these hugely important subjects with awesome guests. Though I wish I had this knowledge 10 years ago (I’m 56) I’m hopeful for all the younger women (including my daughter down the road) benefitting from this information now. Thank you, thank you.

This podcast makes me feel normal in such an abnormal time of life
I have learned so much listening to this podcast, which, in and of itself is amazing. Hearing that I am truly part of a very normal, very healthy but equally frustrated community makes me feel better and empowered about what I’m going through, what I can do about it, what I can’t control and what the future holds. Thank you so much for being there and bringing all this information to me and my sisterhood.

    Menopause at 56
Wow! This is the best menopause podcast I’ve found! I wish I’d found this when I was starting perimenopause in my early 40s. I feel less alone, and more empowered, so thank you!

Please limit the time of your sponsors-yikes!
Great show, just so many ads! I get the need for sponsorships but this has more than I’ve ever experienced.

Exactly What I Have Been Searching For!!!
Discovered this podcast through Hot and Flashy YouTube channel. I am SO glad I did. I am a nurse who has been concerned with fitness since my teens. My natural upper body muscle definition literally disappeared around age 50 even though I was training as hard or harder than ever. I am now 56 1/2 and still in perimenopause. Crazy intense vasomotor symptoms despite Paxil and very low dose Gabapentin. Frozen shoulders on both sides have finally mostly resolved. My mother had both lobular and ductal breast cancers (at different times) after 25+ years of HRT. And I am also positive for anticardiolipin antibody which can make you more susceptible to blood clots. So I have been discouraged from taking HRT. I CANNOT stop listening to this podcast. I am captivated and empowered!

    Every show hits the mark
I wish I had a group of women who had these conversations back when I was in my 40’s. Even though I’m a bit older and not a podium go-getter - I found so much of the dialogue and topics are relevant to me. A lot of “ah-ha” moments. The guests are all so interesting and I’ve started to follow many of them. Thank you Selene and Feisty Media for delivering such a positive, fun and meaningful podcast. I’m telling all my female friends about it!

    Excellent information!
Thanks Selene and the Feisty Team for an outstanding podcast! I’ve enjoyed all the episodes I’ve listened to so far! Today heard the one with endocrinologist Jody Dushay. Very insightful! I have type 1 diabetes and I take Ozempic. Good stuff!

    Like finding your sisters
I read Roar and found that sweet spot for training and coaching girls that i had been missing. Then Next Level came out just as i was starting to feel “old”. It restored my faith that age is just a number. But when perimenopause hit suddenly and took me down fast, the Feisty Women that Selene has brought together on “Hit Play not Pause” has been fuel to keep me searching for the answers and support to make it through this transition. It can feel very alone but with so many knowledgeable experts and women connected through this journey, it’s like having a sister group of 5000. I’m not broken, just going through the change with all of you. Together we’ve got this!

Great information for women of all ages
Came for the episode featuring Anne Alexander — stayed for the candid conversation and empowering advice. I adore the mix of conversation, spiritual and science being featured on this podcast. Perfect for any woman looking to embrace her body, learn her hormones and feel great about movement.

    Binge-worthy!!!
I listen to many podcasts and as a podcaster myself, I’m pretty picky about what I listen to and I LOVE this show. As a journalist and a kind, compassionate, curious person, Selene is a top-notch interviewer. She is clearly deeply interested in this topic and in bringing our her guests’ expertise. I love that her guests are so knowledgeable and varied in their backgrounds. I’m not in perimenopause just yet but I love that this show exists - I hate the idea of trying to “cram” once I’m in it so its great to take in a little info at a time so I’ll be (hopefully) ready or at least educated when my hormones change. Keep up the amazing work❤️❤️❤️

    Misleading
As a mid 40 female entering perimeno I was looking for info. Every time I see an episode that looks like it has info I need, I download it….and then spend at least a half hour listening to ads and chit chat between Selena and her guest. I just tried to listen to an episode where I had to forward through a half hour of the guest talking about her past and credentials and I didn’t hear anything about the actual topic. I give up.

    Required Listening for Everyone
Whether you are a female or work with, support or love one, this is required listening. The topics are always inspiring and timely. And Selene pours her heart into each episode.

Love this and wish i had found it 10 years ago
A kinesiology prof recommended this to me. I have had a horrible time in perimenopause and have learned so much. I also bought the book about it.

    What happens to muscle…
I was looking forward to the episode “what happens to muscle during menopause”. However, the episode focused on peri-menopause and the show guest admitted that the research is still out on whether there is carry over into menopause. Aa a formerly very active female who went into menopause at 42, i find little explanation for the radical changes occuring and what i can do to modify them( yes, i do hormone replacement& the fluctuations amaze me) and no, i do not get enough protein. The gyms are filled with younger women. I’m searching for my new tribe. I enjoy your podcast and appreciate the education.

    Informational and Inspirational
As a post menopausal mountain biker and fat biker I have been struggling with performance and body image since going through menopause 4 years ago. Since finding this podcast I have been inspired by so many women on the show! I love Selene’s positive outlook and I feel part of a community that understands what I am going through.

    About time!
Like so many, I just thought menopause was a year or so of hot flashes and finally no period. After thinking I was crazy and likely dying- I realize now what’s actually going on. This podcast has completely given me hope and tools to work on getting back to feeling like myself. 🙌

    Great information!
Wow, just stumbled upon this pod. Funnily enough it was from seeing Oprah’s reference to it. You are right, there is so much pressure, so much misinformation and just plain lack of information outthere. I listened to your episode with Dr Carla DiGi. and really appreciated the level headed and thorough approach to decision making in truly individualized care. Thank you! As an eating disorder specialist - I would urge the young CrossFit athlete with amenorrhea to seek help, not hormones to cover it up. We know how to get and regulate our cycle - by eating disorder and disordered eating care, renourishing the body.

    Changing the future
I’m hopeful that by being vocal today about menopause, that future generations of women will benefit! We need more research, we need to be heard!

    Love love love this!
Recently found this podcast, and I can’t say enough positive about it. As a runner, who is in perimenopause, I finally feel like someone gets it! The advise, commentary, guests are so honest and open! We all have our own journey, but this podcast makes me feel like I’m not wandering around all alone. Thank you!

    All of the episodes!
I can’t say enough positives for this amazing and educational podcast. It should be required listening for all women, especially for those heading toward our fourth decade. It’s given me the tools to speak effectively and thoughtfully with my health care providers, to find the best possible answers for my health and wellness. I’m so grateful for Selene Yeager, Stacy Sims, and all of the incredible guests that have shared their knowledge and wisdom on all things women. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Tanya Fredricks

Love the content, too much up-front sponsor material!
I’ve really enjoyed the guests and the content shared on this podcast, but I have to fast-forward at LEAST 8 minutes before I can even get to the material! I know sponsorships help fund podcasts, but that’s kind of crazy
  • what nuckname can i use?
    Great, honesty info. Always.
Love your guests and your convos. There needs to be more of this out there in the world! Your Title IX show was awesome! Crazy it has been only 50 years!!

Absolutely the best podcast for active women over 45
I just love listening to Selene’s interview conversations . It is clear that she loves learning along with us and I appreciate and learn from nearly all of her guests. Great balance of all types of health and inspiration for the adult female athlete. Also her sponsors are high quality products and services.

I stumbled across this podcast a month ago, and i’m going to go back and listen to all 87 episodes. Perfect podcast for active women age 40 .

    Love Selena’s Questioning
She usually asks about exactly what I want to know. I’ll sometimes think she won’t be able to ask what I want to know. Then she finds a perfect non- invasive way to ask, I’m happy!

Content great. Speaking over guests not so great.
Constant speaking over the guests. I have a pet peeve about women speaking over other women. We get that enough without doing that to each other.
  • Medicare4All2020
    Wow! Love this!!
I used to take spin classes from Selene years ago and she got me fit and healthy. Now that I’m post menopausal, she’s helping me again. Soooo much good information on here. I’ve learned a lot! Thank you, Selene!!

    Great podcast
I love this podcast. There is so much great information in each episode I find myself taking notes. I’m a physician and I can say there really is a lack of appreciation in the medical field for the multitude of changes our bodies go through in peri menopause/menopause. I think this should be required listening for every women - I’m recommending it to all my friends.
  • W_runnr
    Great Information Too Many Advertisements
The information in this podcast is excellent. I started listening when it first launched and have learned something in nearly episode. But I’m updating my review to 3 stars because this is yet another podcast that has gotten sponsor money hungry. In a one hour episode there are at least 3 sponsor ads that are several minutes long. I understand the reason for having sponsors but do you really need to have that many ads in one episode? Are you still here to share information or just make money off your sponsors?
  • Jill satran
    Great podcast
So energizing to find a podcast that is focused on women over (50ish) who are still active and athletic. It’s hard to find research focused on this niche and this team ferrets it out and helps explain it in ways that keep me motivated! Thanks!!
