StraightioLab

948

StraightioLab is an intellectual podcast where smart comedians George Civeris and Sam Taggart unpack the rich, multi-colored tapestry of straight culture. In each episode, George and Sam are joined by a guest to hold a MIRROR to society and finally get to the BOTTOM of mysterious and perverse topics such as college fraternities, gender reveal parties, the military, themed restaurants, and the concept of "the holidays." Scared? Good.

    Losing the plot
They’ve become post post POST analytical internet pillcoded to the point where there’s no conversation it’s just spinning out over their guests trying to assert a sociological theory about a trending tiktok

Fun with expansive gentle freeing minds
Be careful watching this podcast. The added IQ points might throw you into a tizzy. Essential claims against reality are frequent playthings. Life finds itself. The best two best friends ever. Let them catch up before segments! Joy and a 35-thousand-feet view on offer here. Accept the gift of Sam and George. Also, this podcast is my answer to: “What podcast would you select if you only had one podcast (show suggestion for Straightiolab) to listen to forever?“

Maybe I picked the wrong episodes to listen to but in each they were not funny at all. The whole time they basically whined and sounded depressed. Sorry guys but you’re def not a ‘comedy’ show.

    These boys? They got IT

    Terrible Guest
This podcast wants to be Las Culturistas - but that’s easy to overlook most episodes. However, the train of unfunny GayGuy™️ guests makes this pod a tough listen. Especially the most recent episode with Dash Turner: he is SO DULL and mean in a cringe way. He basically bullied the hosts in the way that sad self-hating narcissistic homos often do when they realize they’re too terrified to reach inside and touch the softer parts of themselves. If the weird self-righteous catty-ness is a bit, it’s tired, but I suspect it’s not.

    Is this it?
I just saw a twink punt a full bag of Popeye’s chicken onto Flatbush. That’s it right? I think it get it. Sad to miss the bois on the 12th. I’ll be outta town by the time that goes down. But tbh I think I’ve seen all New York has to offer. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Set me straight, so to speak.

    Explicit?
Not labeled explicit and everything I listened to on this podcast had a sexual reference. EVERYTHING. Call a spade a spade.

    Oops
Just now for the first time ever I looked at my apple podcast review history and realized I somehow accidentally left a two star review god knows how long ago. This was a mistake, please forgive. Sam and George make a terrific podcast here. Their evolution as they build the plane while flying has been hilarious and unexpected at times 💚

I had to write another review because the reptiles episode was so ridiculous and perfect
Thank you for essentially partnering with my Zoloft prescription to reduce my anxiety and existential dread throughout the day. Also I had a dream that I ordered a Diet Coke from George at a cafe and he was so nice. The blonde girl waitress rolled her eyes at me, but he didn’t! Glamour girl hootie hoo!

    Guys…
My previous review said this podcast is better than all other podcasts combined. Sadly, I must rescind this proclamation. Had to stop the last episode halfway through because you guys, Bill Clinton famously owned a cat!! And Idaho is known for potatoes not corn!!! Still giving you 5 stars but I’m seriously fuming over here and not sure I can believe anything you say ever again.

    A Win for Science!
Wow, I’m so relieved to have finally found a podcast whose hosts take their science SERIOUSLY. You can really tell they went to so much school for this and are true experts in their field. Straightness is *such* an exact science, and it really takes professionals who know what they’re doing to not only conduct all the lab studies, but also to relay the findings clearly and without bias or irony. So rare to find these days!

Podcast starts now podcast starts now
One of the funniest things to me about this show was how they straight-up stole the theme from The Great British Baking Show and used it as their own. It tickled me every single time I tuned in. For at least a year, this made me giggle inside. Then I watched the baking show and realized it is actually is not the same song. Disappointed.

    Love, from a rural gay
I love this podcast so much. But I wish you would acknowledge that there are gay men living in small towns across the country. Not everyone lives in New York or LA. We are just as educated and ambitious as you. And honestly, we probably understand straight culture even more! 😂

    George’s Joker Sense of Humor
Oh Hello, Elder Millennial gay guy from the midwest here . I had to stop the Lauren Oyler episode to come to the reviews to defend my fellow millennial gay Kathy Griffin fan, George Civeris. Obviously “vote blue no matter who” is now just a hilarious joke. True glamour girls know that! anyone not in in the joke needs to go scratch. Much like the sentiments “She’s running!” and “We did it Joe!”. These are now things we can laugh at. i’m sorry but i am with George on this one. A boomer comedians yelling at gays to “vote blue no matter who” is funny. this glamour girl is here for the backlash era!!
  • This is a ripoff.
    Punching Down
This was my first episode. This was mostly just punching down at people in poly relationships, and in ways that aren't funny, but just repeat the same ideas that the most ardently straight, committedly heteronormative people use to punch down at people in poly relationships. There's nothing new or insightful here, it's just the same old things being said with the plausible deniability of queer irony. Are the straight-coded, poly-as-identity subjects of random magazine articles tedious? Yes, of course; otherwise they wouldn't be held up as weird curiosities for pageviews. I get that you're attempting to talk about a specific form of polyamory that is incredibly easy to mock, but this is still just punching down, especially when the guest is so committed to valorizing their own open relationship as the Correct Very Queer Way to do essentially the same thing. Congrats, I guess they're Winning at Queer? The worst thing is that, as someone who is in a poly relationship - albeit one where we're all gay; maybe that makes it okay in the eyes of the show's hosts - friends are now sending me this episode for comment and agreement. That just leaves me wondering what they must really think about my being in a poly relationship. Not a great feeling.

    The Ads are terrible
I love this podcast 5 stars but your ads absolutely do not reflect your views. iHeart must control this but it’s so hard to listen to a thoughtful and fun conversation and then hear dangerous ads

I listen to a lot of pods
But truly none compare to Straightiolab. They define this queer alt-comedy genre in a brilliant way. They’re just the best!!!!!

    Love so much
Long time listener, first time reviewer: if you want a conversation of insightful and delightfully unhinged commentary, listen to this pod. Give it your time, your heart. Also the Santa ep truly sent me over the edge… Santa and The Patriot Act?? THIS is the stuff that keep me thinking.

Love the Show, not the Audio
One of the BEST pods out there. Y’all are so funny. But PLEASE fix the audio fading :( Not sure if George isn’t speaking directly into the mic or not but it’s distracting when it fades in and out.

    Great show, bad audio!
One of my top 5 favorite 2-gay-guys-talking podcasts. Why has the audio gotten so bad lately? Volume keeps cutting in and out.
  • bagsofpotatoes
Love the energy, but stay on the mic please
I’ve been listening for a while and it’s almost always a fun time. But lately, the audio goes dim sometimes. It sounds like they move away from the mic throughout the episode which is pretty distracting.

    Review of love
What’s up Straighto makers it’s a super chill listener here and I just want you to know I love the show and I can’t get enough. I listen every week and go back and listen to the same week from the year before we a need an extra dose to get me through. Xo

    Dang
Can’t believe “Goofy is a gooner” dropped the same day that “Dang” did. Y’all should see if Caroline Polachek would come on and do an episode about interpretive dance or something lol. Also, what about maybe a patreon movie club episode about Down Low with Zachary Quinto and Lukas Gage? Also, worse idea: maybe a patreon episode about like a video game?
