Relative Fiction

136

Nicole Georges grew up believing that her father was dead. That’s what her family told her, after all. But when she was in her 20s, a palm reader told Georges something different. Turns out, that palm reader was right. Based on the award-winning 2013 graphic memoir "Calling Dr. Laura," this six-episode podcast will take us through Georges’ search for her father, the stories she was told, and the rollercoaster of belief and identity she went through in the process. Because if family is a story we tell ourselves, what happens when those fictions break apart?

    Thank you, Nicole!
Brave, honest, painful, quirky, hilarious. My own family background is nothing like Nicole’s, yet there was so much I could relate to. Thank you for this gem.

Absolutely wild! I’m on the edge of my seat!
This is such an unreal sequence of events, and Nicole does a fantastic job of telling it in a way that is both heartbreaking and hilarious! I’ve already cried and laughed and I’m only 4 episodes in.

    Thank you
Thank you for sharing. I can’t put into words how much this spoke to me and reminded me of the story I share with my many siblings. Sending you all the love.

    Wow. I LOVE this podcast.
I originally heard about this podcast from Jessica Lanyadoo’s show. Wow. It is extremely well-made, demonstrates phenomenal storytelling, and I actually felt moved enough to write this review (I don’t often write reviews!). This is a binge-worthy podcast about a family mystery that unfolds with the help of actual clips from interviews with Nichole’s family members. It makes me feel a little snoopy, and like a fly on the wall…exactly what I love (especially because I can totally relate to family mystery and drama). Thank you, Nichole (and OPB) for this treasure!

    Heart-opening
I heard about Relative Fiction on Jessica Lanyadoo’s podcast. Wow. Just so, so good. Achingly tender and heartbreaking, while still being sharp, observant, and funny. I loved this so much.

    so well crafted!
This podcast is so well written and engaging and gentle and human and relatable. I even knew parts of this story from reading the book - but the podcast gives it 17 new dimensions, introduces new characters and makes me care more. Reminds me of my family and my identity struggles even though my life is very different than this. Great for a drive, or a walk or a draw. Love Nicole's voice too.

Love this show. Where is the next episode?
Discovered Nicole Georges through the description of her pandemic elopement in the New York Times. This seemed so unusual and idyllic to me that I went on to track down her podcast (Sagittarian Matters) and buy and read her books (Fetch and Calling Dr. Laura). I found them all delightful as all contain the same authorial voice and sensibility. I had just finished ready ‘Calling Dr.Laura’ when this podcast came out. What could be better? Please continue this show, Oregon Public Radio, as I am eagerly awaiting the next episode! And for those of you who enjoy this show, consider sampling other varieties of the Nicole Georges oeuvre while awaiting more episodes.

    A perfect podcast
This is everything I want in a podcast: smart, funny, compelling, relatable, full of twists and turns and leaves me with a lot to think about. I read Calling Dr Laura years ago and will begin rereading it this evening. Thanks Nicole, for your vulnerability , honesty, and sharing your story.

    so so good
I loved this podcast so much! A wild and compelling story that is moving and interesting and has a narrative AND has not been shoved into a cutesy overly-neat conclusion or hokey life lesson. I am really blown away by Nicole’s calm honesty and true compassion.

    Beautiful intimate storytelling
Wow even having read a lot of Nicole’s work this podcast is giving me more to reflect on and dig into my own relationships and feelings about family. I just love Nicole’s work!

Riveting, relatable and still stranger than fiction
Nicole’s story manages to be riveting, relatable, poignant and still funny. I relate to the dysfunctional family drama although my story is not nearly as interesting and contains no Saudi Princes. I look forward to listening to this every week and have gotten my husband hooked as well. Sending much love to Nicole and Ponyo! ❤️

I am really enjoying this podcast! It’s fascinating and darkly humorous but also resonates somewhat with my life. I can’t wait to hear the entire story - or should I say stories.

“When someone close to you has hurt you, what do you do with your memories of all the times they showed you love?” Nicole is such an earnest, passionate soul. It’s so special to bear witness to her vulnerability. Thank you.
