Daily News #187

Houston Matters is a radio program airing weekdays at 9 am on Houston Public Media News 88.7 FM in Houston. During each hour, we’ll investigate the issues and ideas, people and places that make Houston…well…Houston! We’ll talk about current events, politics, education, health care, the environment, business, transportation, arts and culture, literature, sports and leisure. But we also hope that what we do each day on Houston Matters serves as the beginning of a conversation — one we hope you’ll continue here, at home, at work, with family, with friends and neighbors. We hope to introduce Houstonians to one another, to celebrate our diversity, and to engage one another through stories and conversations that demonstrate depth and context. Just the sort of thing you count on from public media.

    Extreme political bias
It’s so unfortunate that so many great shows have been ruined by their obsession with partisan politics with no attempt at neutrality. Any deviation from the narrow minded, bigoted opinions of the producers is heresy because their tribe lose an election 2 1/2 years ago. I would have rated zero stars if not for the excellent content pre TDS. Hopefully rationality and openness to diversity of opinion will return eventually but I couldn’t justify donating to HPM anymore. I still listen occasionally but am rapidly losing interest in a once great show.

    Special Edition
I am typically a fan of this show when it’s led by Craig Cohen & I have appreciated the local doctors and scientists that have contributed, but Ernie Manouse is insufferable and the way he treated a guest today by inserting his own political views (the guest had covid - his family got it & he said he’s a moderate, he asked for feedback on the media’s role in where we’re at, and the guy answered and he said he didn’t agree and just was patronizing) - if you don’t want politics inserted, then stick to the topic and don’t inject your own views (when it has nothing to do with the pandemic).along with this, it’s almost as if the info can’t evolve & we have to stay in the crisis / and downplay any progress or anything positive. That is one thing my friends who are thinking this is political keep saying & i can see their point because it’s all just intense. I’m not sure if he realizes the demographic that’s listening aren’t the ones that are anti-maskers, or believe this is a hoax - we are doing what we need to do & so i wish he’d save the lectures and hype for those who aren’t.

    Give it a rest
I used to listen to this show for daily local news. In recent months the fear mongering and aggrandizement of COVID related issues is insufferable. There’s a way of reporting the facts without sensationalizing it, Houston Matters should aim for that goal. Even the tone of the reporting is overkill. Every time I try to listen I hear myself saying “give it a rest!”

    Partisan
If you enjoy one-sided, bias discussions, you will enjoy this dumpster fire.

    Giving Houston a bad name
Before Trump, this was a 4 star show. Downhill ever since.

Love the show: Information without bias or hyperbole.
A great way to hear timely information affecting the Houston Area without being subjected to guests (or hosts) spouting unsupported opinion, bias, or hyperbole that insults the intelligence of the listeners. If I want to have my worldview affirmed, I’ll listen to Fox or MSNBC. If I want to hear what’s actually affecting my life, I’ll listen to Houston Matters.

A way to keep in touch with Houston
I live abroad 10 months out of the year so this programming keeps me in the loop and grounded to all the local happenings going on back at home. Such a great source of information.

Any Houstonian who wants to be aware should subscribe to this!
I'm a News 88.7 addict, and love that this airs at noon and at 7 pm. Wonderful to listen to Craig Cohen when I'm at work late. Thanks to this, people always turn to me to find out what's going on in the city since the local TV news are too sensationalist e.g. leprechaun spotted in Memorial Park (local news) vs. covering Poetry Slam Festival (according to this podcast). It'd be great if Texas Standard and Houston Matters were broadcast back-to-back as a state then city theme, but I understand that Fresh Air is too popular to be bumped to a different slot.

Finally a show that Houston worthy.
Cool show, hopefully it lasts for a while. BBC world have your say was getting too big anyways. Issues they discuss are a little scattered but hopefully they will have days dedicated to certain issues for e.g. Monday - markets/local economy, Tuesday- social, cultural, Wednesday- local and state politics, etc. you get the jist.

Good Show - Please keep it neutral
Thanks for setting up this local podcast to cover Houston issues, news, updates, etc. Please keep this show neutral in regards to politics. When I first started listening to this podcast it was a little left leaning (unfortunately) with most guests representing liberal democratic viewpoints. I understand that these people are flooding into Houston (no pun intended) and it's changing our landscape, no doubt about that. I do feel that you guys have done a fair job of keeping things neutral but I’d like to encourage that your podcast stay that way instead of going off the deep end. Speaking of flooding, I was listening to the recent podcast regarding the disaster recap and how Houston officials responded, etc. and there was a a female with a foreign accent doing an interview that mentioned something about the identity of a man who was found dead in the flood and how his race was mentioned in the report. Her tone of voice made it sound like she found a problem with that. How is mentioning race an issue? Could you maybe consider that the mention of his race could help identify him in the case that he somehow lost certain identifying features? Race baiting is liberal 101 and that was what prompted me to write this review. Not all of us see our differing colors and ethnic names as a problem - it is what it is. Neither do I see an issue with mentioning specific ethnicities when mentioning a person’s identity i.e. Asian Male, Black Male, White Female, Hispanic, Mexican, whatever. Stop trying to create an issue where there is not. Keep the podcast neutral and you will hopefully see more positive reviews. I appreciate the podcast & thanks for your hard work!

    Great for Houstonians!
This show is a well done, thoughtful look at local Houston issues, and I'm so glad to find this in podcast format on iTunes. I catch snippets of it on the radio on Fridays and am now glad to be able to hear the whole thing at my leisure.
